Asbestos is the name for a group of six different fibrous minerals that occur naturally in the environment. These fibers are impervious to heat, fire, chemical and biological degradation, they do not dissolve in water or evaporate, and they should not detect any odor or taste. Because of these properties, asbestos is widely used in industry as a ready-made products, such as building materials, friction products, and heat-resistant materials.

Chrysotile or white asbestos, belongs to the serpentine family of minerals, and 95 percent of all asbestos used in the United States. The remaining five, amosite, crocidolite, and fibrous varieties of tremolite, actinolite, anthophyllite, and belong to the amphibole family. Asbestos fibers are flexible and curved, and amphibole fibers are often fragile and the rod or needle. Mass asbestos fibers break easily and are tiny airborne particles that can be easily inhaled or swallowed and cause serious health problems many years later.
