Types of Mesothelioma Surgery


Depending on the type and stage of mesothelioma, with whom you have been diagnosed, your doctor may recommend one of several different types of surgery.

Depending on the type and stage of mesothelioma, with whom you have been diagnosed, your doctor may recommend one of several different types of surgery. Possible options include:
Pleurectomy: This procedure involves removing the cancerous part of the pleura, a part of the mesothelium that covers and protects the lungs. This can help alleviate the effects of the tumor to reduce its size, and delay its spread to other parts of the body.
Pleurodesis: pleurodesis is a palliative procedure, which means it is designed to minimize the symptoms of the disease rather than cure. He handles the pleural effusion, or fluid accumulation in the lungs, which is a common problem for patients with pleural mesothelioma.
Pneumonectomy: pneumonectomy usually recommended for patients with pleural mesothelioma, which affects only one lung. It involves removing the affected lung in an attempt to stop the spread of disease.
Extrapleural Pneumonectomy: This procedure is recommended only for mesothelioma patients who do not have strong lungs and heart. This is an extreme form of surgery that involves removing part of the pleura, diaphragm and pericardium (lining of the heart). This can be an effective way to remove cancerous growths that have spread widely.
Cytoreductive surgery: This is a newly developed form of mesothelioma is surgery. It involves removing the cancerous tumor followed by chemotherapy administered directly into the affected area. It was effective in increasing life expectancy for mesothelioma patients.

Although mesothelioma surgery is not recommended for every patient, it can be an effective way to help reduce the symptoms of the disease, while improving long-term prognosis patient.
